What is LANAP   LANAP Procedure  LANAP vs. Traditional Gum Surgery  FAQs  LANAP in the News

What is LANAP®?

One of the most common dental conditions is gum disease. In fact, there are millions of Americans who suffer from this disease every year. Linked to many other serious health problems such as diabetes, pancreatic cancer, and heart disease, gum disease is an epidemic that plagues people throughout the world. Its symptoms include red, swollen gums, pain and bleeding between gums and teeth, persistent bad breath, tooth sensitivity and sometimes other unpleasant and serious oral problems. In many cases, these symptoms do not become apparent until an advanced stage of gum disease. Once the disease becomes serious, treatment can be complicated and invasive.

How is LANAP® Different?

LANAP®, or Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure, is a laser treatment for gum disease that is much less painful than traditional gum disease treatments. When periodontists perform this treatment, they are able to target and remove only the bacteria and diseased tissue in the pockets of the gums, allowing the healthy parts of the gums to remain unharmed and heal properly.

There are many different types of lasers that are currently being tested and implemented in some dentist offices, but the PerioLase® MVP-7™ is the only one that has been cleared by the FDA. After years of research and studies, this laser is the first one that has been cleared for the treatment of gum disease.

Benefits of Laser Treatment

One of the biggest reasons that laser treatments are becoming popular is that they enable doctors and dentists to perform procedures that are less invasive and more effective. There are several benefits that you may experience when you elect to undergo LANAP® as oppose to traditional periodontal surgery involving cutting and stitches.

The laser used in this procedure gives the periodontist the ability to control bleeding and remove diseased tissue. By specifically targeting only the bacteria, rather than generalized recession, this procedure reduces the amount of discomfort that a patient experiences during and following treatment. Typically healing is much faster and more predictable than it would be with traditional gum surgery, with less inflammation, bleeding, and other side effects.

One of the major advantages of laser surgery (LANAP) is the ability to naturally regenerate bone that has been eroded away due to gum disease. In most cases bone grafting and other invasive techniques are not needed and we are able to save teeth that were previously deemed hopeless.

If your gum disease has reached a point that it should be treated, choose the safest, least invasive option by choosing the LANAP Protocol.
